Heres something I'm not understanding....
First they say, put in more detail, so you do, then you give them the poly count and they say "holy shit". Then, they say you need to smooth it out, you smooth it out and give them the polycount, then they say "holy shit".
Also, doesnt look boxy to me, Doctor, give us a First person view of it so we can see a little more detail on the sides.

The thing is, detail + relatively low polycount = win. Box + high polycount = teh noes.
I could probably beat that with half the polies, although to your credit it is only your second model while I've got to the point of being headhunted for CE projects (which isn't necessarily a great thing, can anyone spell WORK OVERLOAD?)
I'd be willing to bet that if you'd used a ref in the viewport for that, it would've come out 200% better.
