For modeling weapons for HEK, is a Refrence model needed?

Im modeling weapons for my HEK maps. Im just wandering if I need an MC refrence model when modeling weapons. If so how can I shrink my model?

if you are useing 3DS max or gmax there should be a buttin biside the rotate buttin(the scale buttin) then use that.(that is for 3DS max) it should be the same for gmax
