i dont know anything about the degenerate triangles but thats a nice model, the handle needs to be a bit rounded at the edges and smoothed and some vertices need to be straightened in the back though, other then that nice job :)

Degenerate triangles dont affect the model, but they may affect the collosion geometry. If they do, make a new collision geometry by dragging a simple box roughly where the model is, maybe molding it slightly to the shape of the model, then get rid of the original model and export the box as the collision geometry

For CE, you can import the .wrl file that tool spits out into your Halo Custom Edition main directory (usually named the same as the JMS you're using) into 3DS MAX once you have your BR model open. Uncheck the first two boxes when it brings up a tiny window with three checkboxes and click OK. Now, wherever there are red bold lines along an edge on your model, that's where the degenerates are. Make sure that both ends of each edge that's highlighted by the .wrl are closed...an extra vertex or two may need to be welded to "close" the end of each one of those edges. Hope this helps. :)
