Holiday Gift Guide

Post by Grenadiac »

I was browsing through my latest issue of PC Gamer magazine, and they were doing their annual holiday gift guide...so I thought to myself, "Why not put together a Modding gift guide?"

You could have things like xbox case mod materials, Halo stuff, whatever you guys can think of. The more suggestions the better. We will compile the list into a guide that people may want to use for the Holidays.

So...let's hear it! Post links to the items you would want as a game modder. I would suggest keeping the price range fairly reasonable, but maybe you just can't stop thinking about the student edition of 3DMax.

Gift ideas should be modding related. Here are some of my ideas:

http://www.clearxbox.com/site/pages/cat_xbox.html
Clear xbox case - $20

http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp ... 43NF+Y3495
3D Studio Max 8 (Student Edition) - $650

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/halo2hks/
Halo 2 Hacks by Stephen Cawood - $25

http://www.gameinstitute.com/courses.ph ... display=44
Game Institute Online C++ Game Programming course - $135

Hackman Hex editor ($29/$49):
http://www.technologismiki.com/en/hackman/editor.php
It has a lot of advanced features and is good for those long days of hex editing (which thankfully are almost never nowadays).

FlashFXP ($25):
http://www.flashfxp.com/
Because everyone that's gonna mod needs a good FTP program.

Hacking the Xbox($25):
http://www.nostarch.com/
A good read on how the xbox was origionally cracked, explains basic cryptology and the legal aspects of it.

A link to the halomods site(free!):
Because they don't deserve to mod if they don't know about this site

Prometheus is cancelled.

To be on-topic ...

Visual Studio 2005 Standard, $49: http://www.academicsuperstore.com/marke ... tNo=742843

Whoever buys it for whoever needs a way to prove they're a student. What I've done in the past (shhh, it's not bad :X) is go to a local university or college and register for $30 and use the student ID to get really cheap software from that site. They've got everything, even a lot of full version programs for cheaper than retail. I linked Visual Studio 05 because there's so many wannabe programmers on here and $49 is a very good price to start with the best IDE around for C++ and C#.

IDA Pro, it's a bit expensive but like N- said, great if you can get a student discount...depending on the univerisity you usually can get them pretty cheap :)

mb a 256mb memory stick? Such as my computer used to have 256 and the modding programs (most) where a little slow, and it isn't as easy to test your mod and minimize ect...

Or, a small video card, they have nice ones for around $40-100, TigerDirect

Or HALO! An enxpensiove gift around $20-30 for people who would love to mod or play with mods or their friends.

I could come up with a huge list but oh well :)
