Read Halo: The Fall of Reach, then play through Halo on Legendary, then read Halo: First Strike.
Don't read Halo: The Flood, unless you like pain. The writing is sh*t. Just play the game, you'll already know how it ends. Everybody dies. Except the people you meet at the beginning of First Strike, and hell, one of them 'died' as well.
You know, I wonder if Eric Nylund wrote both Halo: The Fall of Reach, then Halo: First Strike, and just figured you'd play the damn game? It sure as hell feels like it. Besides stuff you know if you played Halo, in Halo: First Strike there is ONE (count 'em) reference to Halo: The Flood. Basically, MC and his buddies who were on Halo try to pretend it didn't happen and put it behind them, and all of the other characters weren't even there for Halo. In fact, ***VERY MILD SPOILER!!!!!*** there's a 'timeline inconsistency' caused by a [omitted] that means that, from one point of view, it picks up just days after Halo: The Fall of Reach, so for many of the characters, there isn't any time between the two. And once it starts, you're too busy to think about Halo, anyway, so I'd recommend skipping Halo: The Flood and just making sure you've played the game all the way through. If you haven't, ***BIG SPOILER!!!***: Master Chief lives!!! That's really all that matters in Halo: First Strike
Oh, and a guy a few posts back confused Mendoza with their old DI, Mendez (I think that was his name) Mendoza has the latino heat, man (read: Spanish/Mexican/Generic Latino accent). I always call him Lopez. He's my favorite, after the two sergeants, Stacker the Bearded White Guy and Johnson the Immortal Black Guy.
