To be honest its all just a huge amount of layers brushed together and blended along with other small things like Gradient maps, level adjustments, and filters =x.
Take this for example:

The way I saw it with this style is if I gave the background a minimal amount of depth, and placed a render on top, the depth would stand out, while still matching with the Background
(However I would find it nice if someone could tell me what Apophysis(spelling?) is.
