Something I've learned is to make your stars very subtle. Here's some good tutorials for planets and stars:

The first planet tutorial is a lot harder and more time consuming, I prefer the second one.

I'll try to get the planet looking better (By the way, that fire is not a contrail. It's supposed to be an explosion.).

Planet still doesn't look as good as I would like, but it's a hell of a lot better than it was before. If anyone is wondering why the atmosphere looks weird that would be because it's distorted by the explosion.
