i'm trying to open the cache of the map, i'm gonna try to re-install 3.5 see if that helps.

ok, i got HMT working (had to find a different version, the 3.5 i downloaded from the utils section didn't work) but it's saying unable to inject texture cux it needs to be dxt2 or dxt3, but i saved as dxt3 in photoshop, any ideas? am i missing something in how to save the edited texture? also should i tell it to truncate or adjust for file size?

Okay, I'm thinking I found where in the ui.map I would change the map names. I'm at work right now so I don't exactly have the offsets. It's right before where you get to the game type descriptions. The only thing that confuses me is that levels are listed as "C.a.r.o.u.s.e.l" and not as "D.e.r.e.l.i.c.t." Is this not where I need to change the map name to show up different on screen?

If this is not the area could someone please post an example offset of where I need to go to change map names?

Thanks

Okay, I think I found the offsets I'm looking for. Can someone please confirm that this is what I need to change in order to have the new name show up on the map selection screen?

Campaign - 01f6d400
Multiplayer - 01f9bc70

Thank you

That's the correct location for the multiplayer map names, not sure about campaign as i haven't messed with them, where did you find it listed as C.a.r.o.u.s.e.l. ? i wonder if that refers to filename, it might make it easier than renaming each map and editing the hex on them

do you know if it's possible to bump the code string along where the level names are? so as to be able to lengthen the level names beyond exisiting characters?

for editing level descriptions you're looking for: 01fa50a0 (the way i found this stuff was using ultra-edit 32 run a search for the hex string relating to Q.u.i (bit from blood gulch description the quick and the dead) and used the same technique to find the string of random names assigned to default or inverted players (whisp, wheezy, etc...)

i think i found this location, it's strange though, there's a reference to "the normal named levels, also to beaver creek and carousel, but also prison bitch and ruined pain, i have no idea what text display this equates to. we should put together a Tut listing the locations of the adjustable values and what can be done with them.

i keep finding interesting text strings, in amongst the vehicle names there is the name "kestrel" does anyone know if this was a vehicle that was planned? possibly along the same lines as the pelican, maybe it was a pelican variant that carrried the warthog and the 2 got combined? "cargo" also appears

Hey, thanks for the tidbits. I was pretty sure I found the right places but just wanted someone to verify before I edit. I don't know if it is possible to bump the code string though...wish I did. Some of my modified names are longer than the original names. I'll probably just abbreviate them to fit within the same space. Then I'll use the level description to give a clearer definition.

I'm interested in some of the 'extras' in there as well. What does Bonus Level refer to. It seems as though I've seen that somewhere before.

Also, I figured out why I was getting disconnected so much when we were trying to chat. I got the lovely Sasser virus. I've not yet figured out how to get rid of it yet though. I can't keep my home computer on long enough to go to m$.com and run their patch.

Hey, great job on finding the offsets guys. It is interesting how there is text saying "bonus level" and "unknown level". It seems like they may have had a map or two that they were thinking of including, but never did. If this is true, I would think it may be possible to add more than 13 maps to the menu. Anyone know if that can be done?

Anyway good job and I'm looking forward to changing the preview pictures of the levels as well. I think ultramagnus was working on a tutorial to do this, so I'll probably just wait for that.

i'm pretty sure that unknown level is actually the map that is shown on a link game before the host picks a level, you know the one that looks like a treasure map :)

as for bonus level it looks like abandonded code, i'm going to start an abandonded code log and keep track of what i find, i know some of it has been enabled by modders out there (flamethrower, gravity gun etc...) but there's lots more stuff that *was* there at some point, double speed, the kestrel vehicle, etc... there's also some interesting stuff that i'm just starting to get a grip on, more info to come.

i did the same for map descriptions, i ended up adding 12 modified maps (i had to keep blood gulch intact, for old times sake :p)

i know what you mean about bonus level, although i could be imagining it.

good luck with sasser

oh and i decided to put a new set of random names into each edition of the halo disc i do, for this one i picked characters from mario games, i was getting bored of playing against "the big L" :)

That's a great idea with changing the names on each copy. I'll be making 4 copies of this for my lan parties. Maybe I'll make one disk as a "lucky" disk with stupid names.

To those with "arithmetic overflow errors": I am not completely sure but this happens to me with many other things I'm trying to do with HMT v3.5. Does anyone know if HMT v3.5 gets this error when working with cache files with Xbox? Also, does anyone know why HMT v3.5 can't open compressed Xbox maps.

Are you guys editing the ui.map file or the uncompressed cache002.map file?

Thanks for the help.

The cache002 is the uncompressed ui.map. To keep your mod temporary just mod the cache002 and xfer back to your xbox. If you want it permanent then compress your cache002 with sparkedit and rename it to ui.map
