It's NTFS format. So, basically there's no way to transfer files through
VISTA --> EXTERNAL DRIVE --> XP ? Would an Intel based iMac be able to read the drive?

Well there are some libraries/programs that you can install that supposedly support NTFS write. But of course they're either homebrew (buggy) or proprietary ($$$). There's a reason my external is formatted to FAT32. Of course that limits file size. NTFS is a trade-secret that must be licensed apparently.

Okay, but genuinely, is there no way to transfer files from Vista to XP? Wouldn't that just defeat the whole purpose of using an external hard drive to back up files?
Kibito, I don't think it's possible to partition the drive without formating it first, which would of course would erase everything.
