Fire Grenade: the next step?

hey, i have been trying to make a fire grenade that instead of having an explosion, there is a "nova" of fire from a flamethrower. ive tried everything i can think of with HHT: messing with the effects, the particle system, everything.
does anyone know how to make things fly out from explosions in random directions?
