Well i prefer Alienware, it is what i use, they are both very nice computers but i would say go with the alienware because that is awsome graphics in it and the processer is alot more powerful than the one in the dell... and you could just upgrade to 2 gig ram later.

I'd, personally, custom make mine. It would be INCREDIBLY more inexpensive and you can customize every aspect of your pc. I'll look up how much a comperable PC to the Alienware one would cost...

i prefer homebuilt anyday. you don't get any crap with the os that attempts to force you to buy it, and you actually know your pc part-to-part.
besides, home-built is gonna save you a ton, like smash said.

Home-built FTW.
shaves about a couple hundred off of any Manufactured machine, (dell/Alienware) about $600 for an adequate machine( like mine) with 2.4 GHz, a 9600SE 128MB, 512MB RAM, and a good speed DVD R/W drive.

Anyone who buys a XPS, a dell, or a Alienware is a total noob. Learn to build your own, not hard, and you'll save money and maybe learn something.

I have the XPS600 but with 2gig of memory and 2 video cards installed.
It runs really well, I've had no problems with it. So no complaints from me.....

No no,
http://www.alienware.com/product_detail ... KU-DEFAULT] this is the best gaming pc from a pc manufacturer. If you want a gaming pc, go for the AMD processors. Yes yes...I know it's expensive.

but you have to ask yourself, is it worth a few thousand extra $$$ just to say, "my computer is the best dell makes and they know computers!...more than me anyway"
or would you rather save the money and know every aspect of your computer.
Pros to building:
(obviously) less money
coustomizable
you will know computers SO much better after you build one
knowing computers readies you for a future basing itself on technology
you can spend whatever you want on whichever part you want to emphasize what you want your computer to be for.
Friends and family will hire you to build PCs for them with a possible tip in there.
Cons:
Multiple manufacturers means if anything goes wrong there are several different customer services to choose from.
You don't have to cool alienware logo on it (or you could buy one on ebay for like .99 cents plus $6 shipping.)
....thats all
I'm currently configuring the pieces im buying for my soon to be computer:
Monitor - 19" widescreen
Case and PS - Shiny ATX case with 550w ps
Mobo - ATI Crossfire Radeon Xpress 3200
CPU - AMD 64 X2 4600+ (dual core)
RAM - 4gigs Kingston ram
Sound Card - X-fi music
Video Card - EVGA 7600gt
Hard Drive - Segate 200gb
CD Drive - DVD/CD drive/burner +/-R
Speakers - 7.1 creative surround sound
Floppy - 3.5" generic floppy
Modem - Motorola Surfboard
OS - WinXP media center
Total cost = about $1,500
Same computer configured as closely as possible on alienware = about $2600 (and thats without speakers or modem)
I think you can see which is the better deal

and don't bother getting a crossfire mobo with an nVidia videocard, it doesn't make any sense. just skip ATi's crossfire, and if you want a dual-gpu config, go for SLI.
