Linux is more development-oriented than Windows. I would reccoment Knoppix live CD distro if you are just learning about Linux.

Burn the .iso to a CD, preferably at the lowest speed. Make sure you have the CD iso and not the DVD, and when you boot up, make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD. To do this press whatever key (probably delete, esc, or F1) as your computer boots up to go into BIOS setup (it will say the key on the screen), then find the boot priority setting and maker sure 'CD' is above 'Hard Disk'
