Halo 2 modding help

Well, I want to start modding Halo 2. I want to get a seperate xbox for modding so i can play live on my non-modded one. but now, if I put Halo 2 on my modded xbox's HDD, since I cant sign into live, I cant get the updates for my xbox and the modded maps. What should I do?

but the muliplayer disc or go on live with the disc on the modded one and download the stuff
