ping

[from the submariners' term for a sonar pulse] 1. n.
Slang term for a small network message (ICMP ECHO) sent by a
computer to another computer and for acknowledgment, often used to
check if another computer on a network is reachable. The number
associated with the "ping" on the Halo players page is the time it took for
the echo to reach the target and bounce back.

Basically, you want to join games with a low ping. You should arrange the game list by ping (from lowest to highest) so it'd be easier. A good ping usually goes no higher than 110. If yours is between 110 and 200, you probably have DSL but need it sped-up. Usually if you call up your provider they'll do it for free. Other reasons for high ping are adware, spyware, downloads (you should stop these before playing ANY internet game), and not enough memory.
