Um, you have tried modding, right?

If it gives you exception, you obviously screwed up in a mod.
Put in your Halo 1 CD, and go to My Computer.
Right click on "Halo", which is supposed to be in the CD area. After you right clicked, click on "Open"

It will then show the Halo installation files.
Open up "FilesCab", a folder which will contain RAR files. Note: You will have to have WinRAR for that. ( http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar342.exe ).
Every CAB file has a couple of maps. I took my time to get you what's in every one.

Cab1 - A10.map, A30.map, A50.map, and D40.map
Cab2 - B30.map, B40.map, beavercreek.map, bloodgulch.map, and boardingaction.map
Cab3 - C10.map, C20.map, C40.map, carousel.map, chillout.map, D20.map, damnation.map, dangercanyon.map, and deathisland.map
Cab4 - bitmaps.map
Cab5 - sounds.map
Cab6 - Contains the rest of the Halo files. The files that are supposed to be in your normal Halo directory, like shown in the following picture...

If nothing works, you only have 1 option left, which is to re-install.
