CPU Celsious Help!

Hokay, I just downloaded a program that monitors my motherboard, I thought this would be useful because...well... I melted my other old motherboard.

.

Now it's probably going to happen again; my CPU's celsious is fucking 83 at the moment..
I left it off for about 20 hours hoping it would cool down and it seems to be getting worse seeing as before I turned it off it was 80.

:/

Seeing as I've only got MSN/Firefox/Spybot open I don't really understand why it's so hot.

Any ideas?

Your best bet would probably be to get a better heatsink, if you are comfortable opening up your computer.

Yeah, it's open now and has been for a while so I don't mind that.
I was thinking getting the new heat sink, I shall look into it.

But in the mean time :/

Install a new fan or a new air intake. Hell, it's pretty much winter where you are. Direct your air intake out the window like my brother.

He actually experienced a 20 degree drop in an hour or two.

Beh, I've just settled on getting a new heatsink.
I've just got to keep my computer off until then... There in lies the challenge :p.

Also, when you get the new Heatsink/HeatsinkFan make sure to apply good thermal paste to get a good thermal conductor between the processor and the heatsink. I would suggest Arctic Silver 5. You have to make sure to apply it sparingly though because it contains some silver to conduct heat, but too much could create an electrical conductor and short something out.

does your utility let you alter fan speed? mine does, it's called speedfan, try it out. (although i can't reccomend correct readings, it was getting 125-ish C for a while 0.o)

also, depending on the method that your last heatsink was secured (ie: most likely with a thermal pad made of mostly paraffin wax) you might run into problems putting that arctic silver on.

Running a computer with the case open can actually make the processor run hotter.

And unless the cpu monitoring program actually makes use of some thermometer connected to your processor, it's probably rather inaccurate.

it does. motherboards come standard with thermal sensors to detect when things are too hot, and if that happens, it'll shut down your system to prevent damage. the temperature monitoring programs are just written to get the values from that, as you would otherwise be unable to tell without writing a program to do so.

I've heard of spywarish programs that just give estimates based on the typical specs for your cpu and the cpu usage, so I wasn't sure.

Yes.If you have a used CPU you have to reaply the thermal paste.83 is sometimes normal for processores especially for Intel ones.I hope you dont overclock

hmm. well, speedfan isn't spyware, so if you guys want to use it, feel free. i doubt maximumpc would distribute spyware with their magazine. it'd kind of hurt the userbase.

try everest, it benchmarks your whole computer, maybe your readings are corrupt?

also, keep track of the airflow in your case, if you mount 2 fans to point inward, there won't be much flow, and the hot air will be trapped inside.
also make sure your fans are pointed in the directions of parts that get hot easily.
