Hey,
First lemme explain the setup....My modem and router are in my basement...I use a LAN port in my room to access the internet (plug my computer into the internet)..
Recently we got a new router....I wanna know how I can use the old router like an extension...like how you have those power outlet things where u plug in a strip of them and they all have power, I want to be able to plug the old router into my wall and have 4 ports for use so that I can use xbox live and be and internet access....
Simply plugging it in doesn't work...
Note: They are two different routers....the main router (new one in the basement) is a netgear router...the old one (now in my room) is a D-link router....
Can someone help me?
Router question
You basically are talking about turning the old one into an Access Point
and disabling all the router's funtionality. So you need to be sure that
DHCP is turned off. Only 1 DHCP server is to be serving up addresses.
Also be sure the "WAN" port on this unit is not connected. Use the
switched ports on the back for your internal network.
Be warned, I haven't tried this, (I just went out and bought an access
point/switcher.)
You may also have to disable other features, again with no guarantee you
will be successful as these devices weren't meant to be used in this
manner.
Best place to start.....Go to the manufacturers websites for both these
units. Make sure you have the latest firmware upgrades and download the
PDF user manuals. See what they have on 'bridging modes.'
If this unit also has wireless, thats a whole new ballgame.....
