Port forwarding for Halo PC

Post by DECOY »

I am trying to halp a friend get his pc hooked up for hosting
Halo pc games. He has had the usual external IP to Internal
ip problem with his router. Obviously, we don't want to resort to DMZ.
I have forwarded the standard halo ports 2302 and 2303.

But, I have conflicting info as to whether I also need to forward
port 80 to enable online update checking. I dont want to open
anything I dont need to.

Can anyone confirm this? Also, if there are any others that
he needs for Gamespy lobby in the 6000-7000 range, and why.

FYI, his router is an old D-Link DI 713P ( dont laugh, he
bought it off me.... and he might read this! :D )

I'm right downtown next to the Skydome (sorry, Rogers centre now).
Pretty good set up, the buildings wired fibreoptic for internet. and I'm in the same building as the Telus Server distro for the whole Cityplace Development. So I got Loadsa bandwith & its FAST!

If anyone jumps in and sez this is off-topic, they better have an answer for my Port 80 question!

I can't help the long posts, I run the service desk for an AV company, and I spend all day explaining tech stuff to non-tech people in micro detail!!

Don't suppose you met anyone here, or there who knows if I need to forward port 80 through the router for updates? :D

Ok, this is a cable service modem, not a subnet IP router.

Worst case scenario.... Well, most Cable companies will not permit
domestic accounts to run an online server.
They consider this to be a security risk to the rest of the local network. It
is possible that they have restricted your ability to host (act as a server)
online, without determining what you are doing.

This is unfortunately a lot more common that you might think. Of course,
this might not be the case, you will need to ask.

*EDIT*

I found the info I needed to set up and host. I posted it in a new topic in
this forum.

If you're having similar problems, I hope there's something in there that
can help you out.
