Rapid Prototyping ~ UPDATE 8.22.05

Posted: Fri Jun 24, 2005 11:17 pm
by Tyler@RMC
Let me introduce myself boys, My name is Tyler Reynolds.

I own Rapid Modeling Co.,a start-up rapid prototypng studio out of California; in-case you're not familiar, rapid prototyping is a method of creating physical models directly from 3D CAD data.... Or rather, if you put a .3ds drawing of the Halo pistol into this machine it will create, in one hour, a fully composite physical model that you can hold in your hand. I am an avid fan of Halo, especialy favoring the M6D 72mm pistol from the original HALO... I've been trying to model this thing from 2d photos but it has been F-ing painstaking. If I could find someone to rip the actual 3d file from Halo, well then I could just run it through the machine! Let me know if anyone here can help me out with this... i'd reward you =)

And just in-case I raised any eye-brows... yes I am full service studio. If you are interested just shoot me an e-mail with any questions you might have. [email protected]

Here are some photos of a custom lightsaber someone drew up:

u mean like the actual .obj file from the game?

easy

i can get the .dds texture too, but u'll hav to get someone else to tell u how to wrap that around the model

its simple. the .obj already has the texture coords in it when you rip it. just use the uv in whatever 3d program you use to wrap the texture.

all you need to do is export the .obj and convert it right?

...You people don't read...notice the part that says "put the .3ds in" ? not .obj -.-;;; Different file format.

Ajemsuh....I just did the same thing, I sent him an email with a 3ds file. :P

I think all of us need to be rewarded...

Wow...I love how you refer to me as Ajemsuh...

-.-;;; Come on, you can do it! 3 more keys! What is it with people on this site and not typing full words? "u" "tho" "kno" "to(too)" They're all like 1-3 keys off. Is it really THAT hard to type those few extra keys? Honestly. -.-;;;

sooo... lemme get this straight, your going to actually make a real-life model of the pistol, full-scale?

Yes it's actually quite easy with the proper equipment..... kthxbye

Guys, I can't believe how fast y'all responded to this... many thanks...

First off, yes; any model you can get your hands on I can create for you. Think big all... halo 2 pistol, alien rifle... I can do all of it.

About the .3ds file... The machine only works if it sees the model as being a 'solid'. What this means is that if there are any 'holes' or gaps in the pistol that allow you to see inside of the surfaces, it won't work. The machine will see into the model also, effectively giving every surface it's actual thickness; 1 pixel in diameter. Needless to say the model would come out as dust. So, on that note can anyone edit the .3ds model to close up any of these gaps? When I bring the thing into my software there are quite a few missing surfaces... is this how it appears to ya'll?

Anyway, hell yes. You all deserve to be rewarded! Tell you what, if you guys can get me a working file of this pistol i'll ship the man who did 3 free pistols, and or paypal some cash to ya. And for the rest of you I can offer the pistol at my cost... $34. I'm not trying to make profit from this thing... only want to hold it in my hand =) Thanks again everyone... Hope to be shipping some pistols shortly...

just make it a editable mesh and flip some of the surfaces. easy. (although my 3ds max expired)

Sad to say I don't even know what you just said =) I would give it a whirl, but my VIS 4 is lacking a serial number and passcode... i'm a fish out of water when it comes to mesh editing.

you saind the machinery works on visibility? try a 2 sided material

my bad for accidently splitting the post. oops. Anyway, for the resurfacing to work I need the model to be 'water-tight' or else it will fail. I've PM'ed [TS]... hope he's our man. BTW, are the weapons from Halo 2 just as easily extracted?

yes, but lett me give you an advice if youre doing the smg... http://files.halomods.com/viewtopic.php?t=32350 use the smg they have in there, it's actualy more advanced that the real one!

what material are the physical models made of?
