sense maybe?
I got a uvw, i upscaled it to the desired resolution, i coloured all the shapes in a flat grey, started with shadowing and concepting the designs of the armour, and then i used my mouse, coupled with the brush tool, at a pixel size of 1, with an opacity of 20 and started drawing detail into it, with scratches, occasionaly switching to white, for lighter tones. At other times i would change tools to burn, dodge, line, history etc. While switching to Maya and applying the texture, looking for errors. If i find errors like lines in the texture, from it wrapping around to join the other side, i would start by making the parts opaque with the history tool copy pasting each side over to a new canvas, flipping tem so they face each other and reworking, once done brining it back over to the original skin so it lines up correctly. I Repeat this process about 8 times in 20 minutes :/
Oh.....I get it. Your used to the noobish way of skinning, where u just simply get a texture, and place it over the top. Kinda innacurate, tbh, because you aren't getting the right, and unique textures, details where you want/need them. If i did that, I wouldn't have taken a month to skin the halowars. I wasn't slacking off either, I was up till 3 am most nights, getting frustrated with the uvw.
Just because I have only been skinning 3 months, doesn't mean im a noob. I've been drawing painting, sketching on paper and in MS Paint since I could hold a pencil/mouse. I did art in high school, ever year, and got a 89/100 in the state, with straight A's through all the in school assessments, doing sculpture, painting, various types of collage and printing (this is Australia btw) in the course in my graduating mark. Art isn't an easy subject. anyone who does it, knows this...I'm not trying to brag, i'm trying to prove a point. I'm even goign to make a skinnign tutuorial soon, to demonstrate what i do, and help other people learn to do it to. though, it helps to be able to draw before you skin. Too be honest, non artistic people cannot create artistic things. it's just the way it is. Your either an acedemic person, or a creative person, imo.
Awesome Sig...But no animated sigs on this site sorry.

I completly agree with you dano... after looking at the Halo Wars Biped uvw personally I can see how you got so frustrated. Its layout was really really bad with alot of pieces just streching out oddly. Neverthe less you did a fine job on it.

^ you have NO idea :X ....But I managed in the end to pull it off. I was going to reskin your spiker, but Masterz made me do some other stuff, and Conscars did it. I feel he did he much better job then what I could have. Veegie have you even seen the UVW? It was Very poorly done. I can't see it taking quite a month but its laid out so bad I can see why he got so frustrated with it.Veegie wrote:What the ****...I wouldn't have taken a month to skin the halowars. That's an artists challenge, adapting.
About the Halowars skin.
Not alot is stitched together. Everything is in little shards. Parts would stretch, and their connecting counterpart would not, creating a big fat line in the texture, that was almost near im possible to fix, without having to re UVW the entire thing (where the arms and legs wrapped around, where the back mirrored etc). The head, feet, hands, back, arms legs the entire thing stretched in places, yet in other places it didnt stretch.
Plus, the model was totally differnet to other normal halo bipeds so I couldn't just adapt the halo 2 or 1 style to the halowars. I had to make it up as i went along and scrap and redoe parts.
Were it UVW'd properly, It would have been skinned much faster and more accurately.
I did however take a break for a week or so, sort of clearing my head, and catching up on sleep, skinning the AR, and several other things inbetween. I always multitask alot of things at once. On and off , whilst skinnning the halowars, i was skinning roughly 6 things at same time, for different people.
I also, believe it or not, have a girlfriend and a social life. However, when I WAS skinning it, I was relentless and gave it my all for many hours on end.
Any skinner who got a look at the skin, and the model for the halowars biped would most likely have given up on the spot, I know this as a fact.
Veegie, I don't wan't to be rude, but why don't YOU try and skin a 2048x2048 res skin, using a mouse, for a biped no one has seen alot of, therefore having to concept the design as your skinning it. Plus the skin being your second time actually doing one. The UVW also has to be beyond f*cked, for it to be fair.
[It also, apparently has to have "Gears of War" detail
(lol@professional skinners using Wacom tablets or similar, with 10+ years of texturing experience under their belt, as opposed to a 17 year old teenager, with an amazing 3 months of texturing experience, using a mouse) [/end smart as* rant]
