Troubleshooting Halo 3 Modding Applications

Post by Tural »

Q: Where can I download these modding programs?
A: You can download the programs in the first post in their respective threads. Engineer. Johnson. Halo 3 Screenshot Tool. Note: You must be logged in to Halomods to download files uploaded to the Halomods servers. If you do not see the download box at the bottom of the first post, you are probably not logged in.

Q: Okay, I have the programs, but now where do I get the maps? Can I download them online somewhere?
A: It is illegal to download the map files from a website or file sharing system, and doing so will get you banned from this site. If you want to get the maps on your own, you will need to find a guide for doing so. This is Halomods, not Xbox-Scene. Xbox-Scene can help you with the modification of your Xbox and whatnot. Here you can find an example of a guide designed to help you acquire files from your Xbox 360 game discs.

Q: I want to use Anthony's Halo 3 Screenshot Tool, but I don't have XSATA or XPort to use in accessing my Xbox 360 hard drive. Where can I find these tools and what is different about them?
A: First you should check Datel's list of official distributors. If you have any of these locations in your city, you should call them and ask if they stock either product. If not, you will likely have to purchase the tool online. Here are some locations you can purchase the tools from: The difference between the two is primarily that XSATA connects to your Xbox 360 console, and sits between the console and the hard drive, using the console's power to run. XPORT plugs directly into your PC, without connecting to your console. XPORT is useful if your Xbox 360 is not near your computer, or if you do not wish to have your console on while using the transfer device.

Q: I can not run one or more of the programs, the application fails to initialize properly. Why am I unable to load the program?
A: Download the latest .Net Framework if you are receiving errors stating the program failed to initialize, or if it tells you that you require the aforementioned Framework. You can find .Net Framework version 3.5 here. This version currently supports the available programs.

Q: When I try to open a map file in Engineer, the program tells me "Could not find your map image directory! This is where we are looking: C:\Some Directory\images." How do I fix this?
A: Before opening the map file, navigate to the Tools section of the menu bar, from there go to Settings > Edit Settings. In the window that opens, you will see a field titled "MapFolder." Inside that directory, you should have the "images" folder from your Halo 3 disc. For reference, here is the directory structure from the Halo 3 disc:

Alternatively, you can change the "LoadMapImage" field to "False" in the settings to ignore this warning.

Q: I can't make any mods, what gives?
A: The public cannot modify the maps and use them on a standard Xbox 360 console. The method for rehashing the map files is unknown to everyone. You may have seen modifications of Forge variant files. These are created by people with a CON resigner. CON is a type of container file the Xbox 360 uses to store files. There is no way for the average user to resign a CON file, and therefore they can not mod Forge variants and gametype variants. Map modifications have been done on Xbox 360 Development Kits, which are consoles designed for game developers. As far as most users go, it is nearly impossible to acquire one of these unless you are a registered Microsoft developer. Don't ask where to get one. Concerning any mods in general, it is impossible for a standard user to modify any Halo 3 content at this time. Please do not post questions pertaining to how, because you can't.
