Installing Updates Help

Please bare with my spelling, I am the worst speller lol.
Well to start I was having trouble getting on live like I said about on my other posts, than someone mentioned updating but were do you put the file? Or I just don't really have a clue on what to do lol, sorry again if it sound like I am bugging you guys I am just tired of this not working.
