Make sure you check ignore backfacing on the seclection screen. That way you only select the polygon you mean to , not the one underneath it. I think Gmax does not support Multi-subobjects .. but you only really need that if you are using more textures than you have in the material view port. ITs go...

Pretty good. IF you are having issues with interiors take a look at Mattp001 tutorial. Its pretty informative. You have to use multi-sub object materials, this allows you to apply one material to an object, but apply sub-object IDs to any face/faces you want allowing potentially each face to have a different texture.
