weapon modelling, does it need 2 b closed?

im just wondering if when u model a weapon does it have to be the same as when you model a map, does it have to be a closed world? or can you have like seperate objects that are seperate from the whole thing?

ok well i hav Gmax and ive been making my custom weapon but when i go 2 export it i cant save it as a .jms file????
