if you can play it off the cd with no problems, then thats weird. You should go through and check that all the files are there, although it wouldnt happen twice. Have you got any leftover halo 2 files on there, i know i have mainmenu file stuck (donnoe why) on my hdd and i cant play halo 2 off my hd...
