Hello, i need help for skining. I extract the bitmap, but when try to open it in photoshop, it says file is not compatibal. what do i do?

I am kind of new at the whole moding thing, and i was wondering how to make it so that when i shoot a turret out of a Plasma pistol, peope are able to fly it. could someone please help me out?
