ok this is a little comfusing if you have never used HEK before...
First, HEK is a group of prgrams that get installed to your Halo CE root directory... (ex. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition)
you will find everything you need to make a map there, except for two programs.
You will not find Photo\Paint Shop, or 3ds Max.
You will need and version of 3ds Max that is above version 3 to model your maps.
3ds Max - Modelling Program used to make the BSP and models of your map (including the level itself, guns, scenery, BIPEDS!!!! [can't wait for tut] and everything else that you can put in the game.
Photoshop or Paintshop Pro - used for creating textures that can be applied in 3ds Max
Tool.exe - This is a program that runs in command prompt. It is used for compiling models and structures and other things into tags that will be usable in Halo. To acces this program, simply place a copy of the command prompt (found in your system32 folder, named cmd.exe) in your Halo Custom Edition root directory.
Guerilla - Once you have compiled your tags using tool.exe, you will use guerilla to edit you tags to make them better, or to make them point to the right files so they will be able to be put into Halo. Or you can simply create new tags to your liking.
Sapien - Sapien is the most fun program to use next to 3ds max. The only drawback is god damn radiosity (mine takes over 3 hours for a simple map). Other than that, Sapien is used to place objets and scenery and bipeds and everything else (weapons, powerups, flags ect.) in your map.
Once you are done, you use tool.exe again to compile your final map file. It will place your map directly into your maps folder so it is immediatley palyable.
Hope this helps!
