Making doorways through something...

OK, I have tried a bunch of ways to do this. Whichever way I try to do it, there are continually open edges, I don't know how to make them not open, is there a way to weld edges? Well, does anyone know where a tutorial is or can someone please explain it? As you can probably tell, I am extremely new at 3ds max I just started using it about 2 days ago.

No, I made a box then deleted the middle, then extruded edges to make it so that the doorway was covered on the top
