n00b stuck on UVW mapping...

Finish a new model/mesh? Got something you're working on? Finish a new map? Here's the place to post it for feedback and whatnot.

n00b stuck on UVW mapping...

Post by Whiteout »

Hi.
I am using gmax to learn how to make maps. I'm on no. 2 of kirk's video tuts. I tried to apply a texture i made onto the base of the box, but, as the tut said, it went grey. THen i went to the modifiers menu and selected "UVW map" but the box stubbornly continued to stay grey. I was just wondering if there is some differece between gmax and 3DS on this feature (I know the tut was made using 3DS).
Please help me because I would really like to start compiling my own maps!
Thanx in advance

select the face you are UVW mapping, unless you already tried taht, because once selected and you go to the modifier, it will UVW that selected thing.

i did try that. just to check, the material id for those bottom faces should be 2 to match with the material id of 2 in the material editor, right? Oh, and by the way, the texture and the gmax file aren't saved in my halo root directory because for some reason my halo root directory doesn't contain a folder called data. Instead, they are saved in a folder entitled "New Ce maps" in My Documents. also, the TIFF file is 511x511 pixels (kirk specified 512x512 but -embarassingly- i made the texture in POWERPOINT so it's not quite the right size). I've no idea about the colour settings of the image. If any of these factors might affect my problem, please help!!!

in the material editor there's this lil checkered box thing...click it while your mesh is selected. BTW, i don't use gmax...so...maybe this helped & maybe not. If you post pics it'd be easier.

The little checkered box shows the texture in the viewport, which is where I think you went wrong. Bring up the material editor and look for a little blue and white checkerbox button. Click it and see if your texture shows up.

hmm... the UVW unwrap doesn't seem to be having an effect on the position of the ground texture. Any suggestions?

Well, did you simply add the Unwrap UVW modifier or did you actually edit it?
