Is torturing an animal to death, whether its for pleasure or survival, any different than torturing a human being? Is the value of an animal so far below humans that humans are capable of standing on top of an animal's head till it dies? Is pouring gasoline on dogs and lighting them on fire the just thing to do if your hungry? Torture is not a requirement for survival.

It just gives people a rush when they feel like they dominate someone, and overtake them slowly, rather than taking them quickly, make them feel every second of it, and painfully. It's a lot harder to trace the torture of an animal to its killer, because we don't have things like fingerprint/DNA databases, etc for them, so he probably saw this as an easy way to get his high.
