If that is all you can do that is fine, but if you could also do any of the following:
1. Add a chainsaw sound to the melee
2. Make so that the the Melee is frozen for a few seconds (as if it were chainsawing someone.
3. Increase the blood amount when meleed.
4. I don't know if this is possible, but i saw on Scarecrow.SPPF, a custom chainsaw model that fires like the sentinal beam, but the beam is not visable, and the chainsaw only works close range...is it possible to make the melee button do that? Or would you need to put it over a different weapon, if so, PM me first!

The chainsaw was made (I think) by taking soem projectile (the weapon is automatic) and gave the projectile a very very short lifespan so you could have a chainsaw that wasn't just something to whack with.

Make the L button a secondary fire...and just have a different sound for that particular trigger fire. Then you can have a gun, and L be the chainsaw

Yea. The first chainsaw in Halo 2 was by pyroman in his Dead In the Water mod.
He used the scorpian tanks minigun projectile, edited it's life span to about half a second, and then raised it's damage to something that was instant kill.
You could easily achieve a working Lancer by setting up 2 triggers and 2 projectiles in the weapon tag. I think theres also something in the weapon tag that makes B not melee any more. Then just make one trigger the Left for the chainsaw, and the other Right for the actual gun. Then just duplicate the tanks minigun projectile, and edit it accordingly, then have both triggers automatic, and set up the triggers and projectiles in weapons accordingly.
BOOM! chainsaw.

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. No wonder that thing won't load. How many polys is that monstrosity? Use bump mapping if you really, really need to, and just stick to a low poly model. This thing looks directly ripped from GoW. That game was detailed enough to put sweat dripping down on the face. Is Halo a game powered by a goddamn supercomputer? No, that's H3. Does Halo have (or need for that matter) buff, sweaty men in armor bigger than the Mongoose? No.
Like I said, make a low poly version that you created. Then texture it and bump it, then put it in Halo.
